Impact of Biodiesel Engine Performance on Operations and the Environment: A Literature Review

ABSTRACT: Fossil fuels have posed a great danger to the existence of living things in the world, and pollution is wreaking havoc on the planet’s ecosystems. Global fuel consumption has risen precipitously because of urbanization, industrialization, and an ever-increasing human population. It has become necessary to consider alternatives to petroleum-based fuels such as diesel and gasoline considering our current overdependence on these traditional sources of energy. In this scenario, biodiesel presents an excellent opportunity. Biodiesel is highly replicable since it is made mostly from renewable resources, such as food and non-edible plants. Biodiesel cannot be used directly in engines because of its high viscosity. The relevant literature is categorized in this study. This research also tries to highlight the benefits of utilizing biodiesel and the advances made by researchers. Various articles about biodiesel fuel and its blends in diesel and engines were gathered and sorted depending on the blending techniques used (complete substitution without diesel or partial substitution). The use of biodiesel in engines and its ability to compete with fossil fuel diesel in performance were among the topics covered in this research.
Biodiesel’s effect on engine performance and environmental impact will be examined in this article. The study reveals that B20 biodiesel will be a replacement for fossil fuel diesel as an alternate fuel. The results reveal that the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and brake thermal efficiency (BTE) for B20 biodiesel are identical to diesel and hence can serve as a potential alternative to petroleum-based fuels.

Biofuel Certification Performance: A Review & Analysis

ABSTRACT: The biofuel performance certification’s scope is reviewed. An operational definition of biofuel performance certification has been developed. The certification of biofuel performance has been recognized as an effective assessment methodology and tool to manage biofuel consumption and improve biofuel performance systematically. It is found that a biofuel performance certification method is required in biofuel industry and biofuel research to authenticate the biodiesel and its blends for use in diesel engine.

Importance of Energy Audit in Diesel Engine Fuelled with Biodiesel Blends: Review and Analysis

ABSTRACT: Number of experiments have been performed on various performance and emission characteristics, effect of biodiesel blends on lubricity and input and output energy distribution in diesel engine fuelled with biodiesel blends. It is also reviewed that energy audit is used in buildings, plants, process and equipments and energy audit method was developed for fishing vessels based on similar systems for land based industries. In land based businesses, industries and households, energy audits are presently used to investigate the use of energy and to identify opportunities for the efficiency improvement and effectiveness in the energy use. Energy audits have been used in various sectors, industries and utilities. This paper is a review paper of energy audit and it is found that there is a vast scope for implementation of standardized energy audit in diese engines fuelled with biodiesel blends. Its objective is to find out a standard energy audit method for diesel engine fuelled with biodiesel blends which evaluate the feasibility of biodiesel blend as fuel and also harmonise the research of biodiesel as fuel.

Performance Evaluation and parametric optimization of a Heat Sink for Cooling of Electronic Devices with Entropy Generation Minimization

ABSTRACT: Thermal management is essential for electronics products. Experimental and CFD analysis of a heat sink for thermal management are represented. After analysis, compared with the experimental and computation analysis. Also, Entropy generation model, fluid flow model and heat transfer model are described. Total entropy generation calculated Sgen and entropy generation minimization are done for best utilization of heat sink for cost, size and better power management. Optimized heat sink by two method one Parametric Optimization and other Multi-variable optimization for minimizing entropy generation. From the results behaviour of mass flow rates with temperature, velocity, pressure drops and other parameters are analysed. The maximum temperature is located at heated base surface of heat sink, below the channel outlet, due to the low velocity of the fluid flow and resulting high concentration of heat flux. The combined conduction–convection heat transfer in the heat sink produces very complex three-dimensional heat flow pattern with large, longitudinal, upstream directed heat recirculation zones in the highly conducting aluminium materials, where the fluid and solid are in direct contact. A detailed description of the average heat transfer coefficient, temperature, heat flux and Nusselt number was obtained. The goal of this research is to find the cooling of heat sink at minimum entropy generation for saving energy and sustainable development.

Effect of Injection Parameters: Injection Timing and Injection Pressure on the Performance, Emission and Combustion Characteristics of CRDI Diesel Engine Operate with Palm Oil Methyl Ester (POME)

ABSTRACT: This experimental study mainly focused on the investigation of CRDI diesel engine powered with palm oil methyl ester (POME) biodiesel and diesel fuels. The Toroidal Re-entrant combustion chamber shape (TRCC) and 6 holes CRDI injector were selected for experiment. The current research engine operated with constant CR 17.5 and speed 1500 rpm. In the first phase of work, the injection timing (IT) varied from -25 °BTDC to 5 °ATDC with interval of 5 degree during the experiments. The injection time-10 °BTDC has been optimized for higher engine efficiency. In the second phase of work, the injection opening pressure (IOP) has been varied form 600 bar to 1000 bar with increment of 100 bar interval during the experiments. The IOP of 900 bar has been optimized with constant fuel IT -10 °BTDC. Finally, the end results of experiments were reported that combined effects of IT (-10 °BTDC) and IOP (900 bar) enhanced the engine output in terms of brake thermal efficiency (BTE), also minimizing the pollutants using TRCC shape and 6-hole CRDI injector for CRDI diesel engine at 80% load.

Energy Analysis and Carbon Saving Potential of a Complex Heating System with Solar Assisted Heat Pump and Phase Change Material (PCM) Thermal Storage in Different Climatic Conditions

ABSTRACT: Building sector still consumes 40% of total energy consumption. Therefore, an improved heating system with Solar Assisted Heat Pump (SAHP) was introduced in order to minimse the energy consumption of the fossil fuels and to lower the carbon dioxide emissions occurring from combustion. An energy analysis of the complex heating system for heating of buildings, consisting of solar collectors (SC), latent heat storage tank (LHS) and heat pump (HP) was performed. The analysis was made for the heating season within the time from October to March for different climatic conditions. These climatic conditions were defined using test reference years (TRY) for cities: Adana, Ljubljana, Rome and Stockholm. The energy analysis was performed using a mathematical model which allowed hourly dynamics calculation of losses and gains for a given system. In Adana, Rome and Ljubljana, it was found that the system could cover 80% of energy from the sun and the heat pump coefficient of performance (COP) reached 5.7. In Stockholm, the maximum COP of 5.12 was reached in March and October.

Impact of Injection Timing on the Performance of Single Cylinder DI Diesel Engine Fueled with Solid Waste Converted Fuel

ABSTRACT: The transfer of waste plastics has turned into an incredible test to the waste management system and because of urbanization and industrialization has prompted consumption of petroleum derivative for energy prerequisite in different areas. The answers for these issues could be overwhelmed by legitimate use of waste plastics as fuel. The paper depicts a correlation of the utilization of pyrolysis oil which is plastic pyrolysis oil (PPO) and diesel in the appraisal of engine execution. Pyrolysis oil is utilized as fuel to check the execution on one-cylinder with water cooled diesel engine. From the investigation, it was found that without engine adjustment, the PPO offers better engine execution with advancement of Injection timing (IT) and could enhance execution by modifying engine.

Multi-generation Renewable Energy System for Dairy Farms: Exergy Analysis

ABSTRACT: Exergy analyses of multi-generational micro gas turbine systems are reported for a grid-independent dairy farm in Ontario, Canada, with an aim of being environmentally benign. Onsite anaerobic digesters utilize farm waste to produce carbon neutral biogas for combustion in the micro gas turbine modules. A range of micro gas turbines coupled with absorption refrigeration units and an organic Rankine cycle are driven by the recovered waste heat to meet the cooling and electrical needs of farm sizes between 250 and 6000 cows. Exergy balances are applied to each component as well the overall system configuration, and exergy efficiencies are obtained. Small farm sizes with one absorption cooling unit are found to be more exergy efficient than large farm sizes with more than one absorption cooling unit, but the difference is less than 0.5%. Most of exergy destruction within the micro gas turbine module occurs in the combustion chamber, which contributes 79% of the exergy destruction of the system. Farm sizes between 250 and 6000 cows are observed to be capable of having their cooling and electricity needs met with micro gas turbines ranging in capacity from 100 to 1000 kW output, while exhibiting similar exergy efficiencies.

Effect of Combustion Chamber Shapes, Nozzle Holes Geometries, Injection Pressures and Injection Timing on the Performance Diesel Engine Fueled with Palm Oil Methyl Ester

ABSTRACT: This experimental study mainly focused on investigation of the performance of diesel engine using palm oil methyl ester (POME). The engine operating conditions such as optimized IT of 27°BTDC and varied IOP with nozzle geometry and combustion chamber shapes were investigated. The better operating conditions of combustion chamber shape and nozzle geometry were reported. The operating conditions of the engine were maintained 1500 rpm and CR of 17.5. For diesel engine operation with POME, it could be revealed that IT of 27°BTDC, IOP of 240 bar, 5 holes nozzle geometry with Torroidal Re-entrant combustion chamber (TRCC) gives more improvement in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) with minimum emissions.

Effects of Using Diesel Particulate Filter and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst with Exhaust Gas Recirculation on the Performance of Compression Ignition Engine Fuelled with Diesel- Di Ethyl Ether Blend

ABSTRACT: In the present work, a single cylinder diesel engine was suitably modified to operate on diesel, diesel and diethyl ether (DEE) in blended form in which percentage of diethyl ether in diesel blends was varied from 5 to 20% in steps of 5%. Further the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on the performance of diesel engine fueled with alcohol and diesel blended fuels were studied. The pre-and post-combustion methods were adopted to study the performance of the modified diesel engine. Post combustion analysis involved use of emission control devices like Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) combination for effective control of unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC) and particulate matter (PM) respectively. From the study it was observed that the engine was consistent in its operation throughout the experimental investigations when operated on selected fuel combinations. Based on the comprehensive experimental investigations carried out the following conclusions have been derived. The brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased with increased injection of DEE and highest BTE was found to be 29.25% for 80% loading condition using 20% DEE and without EGR. In-cylinder pressure and heat release profiles showed delayed combustion for DEE blends compared to diesel and the same was more pronounced with higher DEE blends. Shorter combustion duration was observed with DEE compared to diesel. Increased smoke and UBHC emissions were observed for increased EGR induction for all operating conditions while the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission decreased. For 20% DEE fuel operation adopted along with DPF, smoke emissions reduced by 75%. It is observed that, adopting DPF, NOx emission reduced by 10%; while adopting DOC, NOx emission reduced by 6%. At 80% load optimum conditions for the modified diesel engine operation with selected fuel combinations were observed for 20% diethyl ether/diesel ratio, and 20% exhaust gas recirculation rate along with both DOF and DOC respectively.

Experimental Studies on Four Stroke Diesel Engine Fuelled with Tamarind Seed Oil as Potential Alternate Fuel for Sustainable Green Environment

ABSTRACT: The main objective of this present novel work is to investigate the performance, combustion and emission characteristics of biodiesel derived from the tamarind seed through the transesterification process as potential alternative feedstock for the diesel engine. The physio-chemical properties of tamarind seed methyl ester (TSME) were evaluated experimentally and compared with the base fuel. Test fuels were prepared in 3 concentrations such as B10 (10% tamarind seed oil and 90% diesel), B20 and B30.Experiments were conducted at a constant speed, the injection timing of 23° crank angle and compression ratio 17.5:1 with varying load conditions to investigate the diesel engine characteristics. TSME 20 shown better thermal efficiency (34.41%) over diesel which is 1.17 % higher and also it produces lower emissions of CO, HC, and smoke opacity. N-Amyl alcohol (NAA) is used as a fuel additive for the optimum blend of TSME20; added in 5% and 10% concentration on the volume basis. From the analysis of experimental data, the use of fuel additives significantly reduces the smoke opacity by 29.49 % for TSME20 NAA 10% blend in addition to the reduction of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons emissions; however, the specific fuel consumption and the oxides of nitrogen were marginally increased.

Different Injection Strategies to Enhance the Performance of Diesel Engine Powered with Biodiesel Fuels

ABSTRACT: The compression ignition (CI) engines are most efficient and robust but they rely on depleting fossil fuel. Hence there is a speedy need to use alternative fuels that replaces diesel and at the same time engine should yield better performance. Accordingly, honge oil methyl ester (BHO) and cotton seed oil methyl ester (BCO) were selected as an alternative fuel to power CI engine in the study. In the first part, this paper aims to evaluate best fuel injection timing (IT) and injector opening pressure (IOP) for the biodiesel fuels (BDF). The combustion chamber (CC) used for the study is toriodal re-entrant (TRCC). The experimental tests showed that BHO and BCO yielded overall better performance at IT of 19° before top dead centre (bTDC) and IOP of 240 bar. In the second part, the effect of number of holes on the performance of BDF powered CI engine was studied keeping optimized IT and IOP. The six-hole injector with 0.2 mm injector orifice diameter yielded better performance compared to other injectors of different holes and size tested.
